Last weekend we celebrated the decision of the PCUSA Board of Pensions to honor the urging of the 219th General Assembly (2010) to extend benefits to the children and partners of Plan members in committed same-gender relationships.
The BOP recognized that these benefits are entirely consistent with longstanding PCUSA policy on equality, and in the best interests of those whose welfare they are responsible to protect, that is, allmembers of the Plan.
The decision of the BOP is not subject to approval by the upcoming 220th GA, although there is already one overture in opposition to the 219th's request and one seeking a Book of Order amendment that would allow opting-out of the Plan by anyone objecting on theological grounds. (Personally, I understand that some Presbyterians object to same-gender relationships, but I don't see how anyone can object to providing medical coverage and death benefits for the family of a brother or sister in Christ.)
We can assume that the BOP is receiving some negative feedback on their faithful decision -- so let's make sure that they know how many Presbyterians are rejoicing. Please send a note to the Board in care of Corporate Secretary Andy Browne, ABrowne@pensions.org or
